Finally...the SURPRISE!

I wanted to wait until my bio came out today on CollegeFashionista to let you all know that I am one of the new fall "Style Gurus"!  I will be writing weekly articles on street fashion during my semester abroad in Oxford, so just in case you haven't gotten enough of me here on LJD, you can now visit this page to get some perspective on Oxford fashion!  I am very excited about this new endeavor, and I hope you guys can read my articles, maybe even "like" what I have to say, or perhaps even comment when you get the chance.

Also, I wanted to mention that I am opening a tumblr that I will post photos on from abroad.  I haven't started posting there yet but once I get my act together in the Ox, expect to be overwhelmed with visual stimulating masterpieces :) (k giving myself a liiiittle too much credit hehe).  Anyways, enjoy folks, and you will hear from me again soon.  STYLE ON!  as the CollegeFashionistas say!

These Four Walls

It's me again.  Bearing news that I am just too tickled to keep to myself.

A few weeks ago after getting back to the States, I took a brief and hectic trip to Newport to finally see the house we are moving into this fall and to see...my new room!  Or suite I should say...gosh, I'm suchhhh a brat.  I'm hogging up not one, but count 'em, TWO of the 5 bedrooms of our new house.  The rooms are connected by a Jack and Jill style bathroom; the room towards the rear of the house will be my "study" and home to my killer new desk, a coffee table and couch for me and friends to sit and contemplate the meaning of life, as well as a cozy little chair that is splendid for curling up with a good book.  In my "boudoir", I'll have my cloud-like bed, a dresser, and possibly a vanity.  I really cannot wait to see it all put together when I come home in December!

I don't know what I'm more excited about...having a bedroom big enough to be called a "suite" or decorating this said "suite".  I decided to go a completely different route than my current room, leaving the butter yellow walls and embroidered pink quilt behind in Kenilworth with the rest of my childhood.  My inspiration for my new room is a mix of my recent travels, photography, and my ever-flourishing affinity for all things vintage.  When I close my eyes, I see a neutral pallete in shades of beiges, grays, and browns, with light and airy linen drapes and cream colored bedding resembling frothy cotton candy.  I see black and white prints on every wall, and even some postcards from my travels hanging from twine all over the room as if they were drying in a dark room.  Here are some items I've selected below, so you can close your eyes as well and dream with me:

My chandelier is made of shells!  It looks like it has been previously owned by a mermaid, I love it!

Makes me wanna take a nap just looking at it...

Love this weathered beachwood look

My ottoman is made out of old burlap sacks!

The pièce de résistance...my desk is actually a giant suitcase that opens to reveal hidden drawers and file cabinets...I'm a little obsessed...

Pack Rat

Time since I started this post: 7 minutes.  And still nothing on the page.  Sorry, I'm a bit cranky today.  I'm getting extremely fussy here in Chicago, and still have a whole 2 weeks to go before I start my adventures in Oxford.  It's hard trying to put my finger on exactly what is causing my anxiety; I don't know if it's the sheer "I'm gonna pee my pants" kind of excitement that I feel whenever a thought of me riding a bike around the cobblestone streets in my Hunter rainboots in a matter of weeks pops into my head, or is it the metaphorical weight I have to carry around with me for the next 2 weeks as I say goodbye to friends, not knowing when I'll be back in Chicago to see them, and of course, then there's packing.  Packing that I know is going to take me an obscene amount of time.  A kind of packing that makes the act of putting my life for the next 4 months into 2 suitcases look like child's play.  I'm talking about digging wayyyyy into the depths of my desk drawers, some of which I cannot open anymore because they are filled to the brim with jewelry boxes, play programs, and yes...the most dreadful, unflattering, mortifying pictures that I cannot figure out why I haven't burned them yet.  An album from my 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. was so horrific that I gasped, threw it back in the door, and promptly went downstairs to grab a beer before continuing to flip through its pages. The cropped argyle sweater...the caterpillar shaped eyebrows sitting above the rims of tortoise-shell glasses...the braces with Oreo lodged in between the wires...the cargo pants yanked above the bellybutton.  It's all too much for me to digest at once.

Some of this stuff makes me consider getting a CAT scan.  What is the importance of hanging on to a comprehensive, typed out list of every single Beanie Baby I own?  SEVEN oriental fans?  A felt Peter Pan hat?  Thank you note from my kindergarten teacher for the pinata I brought in for my birthday?  Really?  And why so many earplugs?

So many questions, and 2 weeks to figure it out.  I need to be cut throat, show no mercy on every single one of my First Communion cards.  But there's this voice in the back of my head, the voice of my 7-year-old self saying "but this is from Aunt Marge, how can you throw it away?  She died 5 years ago...this is one of the only memories you have left".  But with each swig of beer that I take, I gain more in more confidence of throwing this crap away.  I'm excited at the thought of owning a new desk out in California, and dammit, I'm gonna need room in those drawers to fill in with more crap that I'll accumulate in the coming years!  So that's what I say to you, annotated version of Tom Sawyer from the 7th grade, and I bid you farewell.

Hope Your Ears Can Dig...

...my favorite selections from Lollapalooza 2011.  I have frequently equated Lollapalooza with Christmas in the past, but it really isn't that far from reality.  Perry Farrell may not look a whole lot like Santa Claus, but every year he consistently rewards us music junkies with such an abundant extravaganza of new tuneage that sends visions of 808 drums and delectable bass rifts dancing through our heads.  Upon entry to the park, each festival goer is awarded a program booklet with a coupon for 40 free songs from iTunes attached to the back.  It's truly the gift that keeps on giving...I can now listen to the sounds of Lollapalooza everywhere I go, close my eyes, and suddenly find myself back in Grant Park on a hot August day.  Find my new addictions below:
Rich vocals, sultry sound...then the riff explosion at the end is powerful to the point of numbing
Love this performance on the hillside!  I just want to be friends with these chaps
Umm...can I have her voice?  So fierce

Ketchup

Many apologies for the unannounced hiatus.  From the moment I set foot again on American soil, these past few weeks have been action-packed to a point where I have to check the calendar three times a day to realize that it's still Wednesday.  There is SO very much to update you on that I have decided to break up my news into several posts; I do hope that it's not information overload for you, so just make sure you have a clear mental slate before you start reading. So sit back, relax, make some popcorn if you so wish, and enjoy some new tunes, design inspo...and even...a SURPRISE!  I can hardly wait to tell you all about it :)
